Bananas

Typically, journal writing doesn’t entail confessions about food habits. This morning, however, I woke up thinking about fruit - specifically bananas.

Nearly three months ago, a nutritionist gave me a list of foods to eat and an even longer list of foods and substances to avoid). The guidance also included protocols around food combining. Fruit was to be consumed as a group that shouldn’t mix with other neighbours. My day now begins with an organic lemon squeezed into our well water and rounded off with a supplement whose taste reflects its boring name: Basic Tab.

The point of this change in diet is to switch the gut from being too acidic to more of an alkaline condition. Some items on the list I had already cut back on or cut out completely. There were, though, some favourite ‘go to’ items such as oats. Since I was a hippie teenager, I made, bought, and consumed granola as my primary breakfast food. No more Lucky Charms for this guy. I would add yogurt, maple syrup, and my cherry on the top - sliced bananas. I tried eating eggs as a starter for the day but, since carbs and wheat had to go, the usual coupling of eggs and toast was whittled down to just an egg. (Enter Three Dog Night’s song - One is The Loneliest Number).

Back to the lonely banana. After some experimentation, I settled on a fruit medley to kickstart my day. I eventually added a coconut-based yogurt. Admittedly, especially working around the garden these mornings, I tend to return to our kitchen mid-morning in search for a protein to fuel the body. Avocados work well.

Back to bananas. Somewhere, without looking too hard, there’s a nutrition expert advocating against bananas - what some call the ‘sugar stick.’ So, I don’t investigate further. Bananas are my comfort food. I like how they arrive in a bunch. (My daughter recently put sticky, google eyes on a bunch then used magic markers to give each banana a personality. We called them a band of bananas). Anyway, I like how they peel. I like how they taste. I like how they look. Somewhere, without looking to hard, there’s also a Freudian psychologist who has written a paper on the phallic symbolism of the banana. So, I don’t investigate further.

Sometimes I post my journal musing. If I do… please don’t send me more information about the pros or cons of a different diet. AND I especially don't need to read a research paper on why I should avoid bananas. I don’t want to investigate any further. I just want to enjoy my banana-based breakfast in peace. I like it a whole bunch.
